The McCarthy Lodge & Ma Johnson's Hotel
The Center of McCarthy, McCarthy Lodge has a long history of hosting visitors to the Wrangell-St. Elias wilderness.
This historic lodge takes you back to when McCarthy was a major frontier mining town deep in the wilds of Alaska.
Accommodations are provided in the historic Ma Johnson's Hotel, located across the
street from the bar and restaurant, and also next door in the Landcaster's Hotel, the only
backpacker's hotel in downtown McCarthy. These facilties are within walking distance to
most of the local eateries, shuttle services, and tour vendors.
The Ma Johnson's Hotel building was built in 1923, and opened by Pete & Ma Johnson
as a boarding house. A spectacular hotel for its day, when steam heat, electricity, and
fresh eggs were luxuries in any city, Ma Johnson's was an integral part of boom-town
McCarthy.
Today, the Ma Johnson's Hotel offers unique rooms decorated with interesting artifacts from McCarthy's earlier
times. Featuring fabric covered walls, original furniture, and original hand made quilts, the rooms also include
custom bathrobes, spa slippers and handmade soaps. Most rooms at Ma Johnson's have pedestal sinks, and there
are multiple bathrooms on each floor. There are no TV’s or phones in the rooms, but there is wireless satellite internet!

showers, laundry and internet access.
Ma Johnson's Hotel offers free transport to and from the parking area at the end of the McCarthy Road, about one mile
